Editing Abbreviations in SLPP

Use

The Edit Abbreviation function in transaction SLPP enables you to create monolingual abbreviations for source language or target language texts. For information on the benefits of creating abbreviations, see Displaying the Full Text for an Abbreviation.

You are translating from source language German to target language English.

·        Target languages French and Danish also translate from source language German in this system. All of these languages can use abbreviations that you create for German.

·        Target languages Japanese and Korean translate from source language English in this system. These languages can use abbreviations that you create for English.

Prerequisites

When you create an abbreviation, the system prompts you to assign a quality status to it. Your translator profile determines which quality statuses you can assign to abbreviations. To create an abbreviation for a full text in your source language, you need to ask a translation coordinator to create you as a translator for the source language. For more information, see Maintaining Translators.

Procedure

...

       1.      Call up transaction SLPP, and enter the language for which you want to create or edit abbreviations.

Abbreviations are monolingual, which means it does not matter whether you enter the text in the Source or Target group box.

       2.      In the Text field, enter the full text for which you want to create an abbreviation.

       3.      Choose Edit Abbreviation.

The Abbreviations screen appears. The full text appears in the Full Text field. The system lists any existing abbreviations for this full text under Available Abbreviations.

       4.      In the Abbreviation field, enter the abbreviation that you want to assign to the full text, and choose Create Abbreviation.

The dialog box Select Status appears.

       5.      Select the quality status you want to assign to the abbreviation.

If you are creating an abbreviation for a language that is not your native language, you are advised to select a low quality status.

Result

The system assigns the abbreviation to the full text. Whenever this abbreviation appears as a source text for translation in the short text editor, translators can display the full text. For more information, see Display Full Text for Abbreviation. For the additional benefits of abbreviations, see Abbreviations.

You can edit abbreviations as follows:

Delete abbreviations

Select an abbreviation from the Available Abbreviations list, and choose Delete Selected Abbreviation.

Change the quality status of abbreviations

Create the abbreviation again, but select a different quality status in the Select Status dialog box.

Create domain-specific abbreviations

Proceed as described above. In step 4, choose Application and then select the domain for which the abbreviation is valid.

Edit available abbreviations

You do not need to enter the abbreviation you want to edit in the Abbreviation field again. Instead, select the abbreviation from the Available Abbreviations list, and choose Delete Selected Abbreviation. The system enters the text in the Abbreviation field.

Find full texts for abbreviations

To display any other full texts to which the abbreviation is assigned, choose Find Full Text. A dialog box lists the full texts, if any exist.
