Example: SAP System Landscape with Two MaxDB Database Instances

MaxDB Database Instance in the LAN 2 Network

There are two MaxDB database instances on two different computers in the LAN 2 network. There is a MaxDB X Server (communication server) running on each of the computers. Using these X Servers, SAP systems from the networks LAN 1 and LAN 3 access the MaxDB database instances in LAN 2.

SAP NetWeaver AS System in the LAN 1 Network

From LAN 1, a SAP NetWeaver AS system accesses a MaxDB database instance in LAN 2 via SAProuter:

·        For data queries using SQL, the AS system uses the MaxDB SQLDBC interface.

·        For administration actions using the MaxDB Database Manager, the AS system uses the SAP RFC library and the MaxDB DBM RFC server.

SAProuter does not have to be used for communication. All communications can be encrypted with SSL (see Data Encryption).

SAP NetWeaver EP System in the LAN 3 Network

From LAN 3, a SAP NetWeaver EP system accesses a MaxDB database instance in LAN 2:

·        For data queries using SQL, the EP system uses the MaxDB JDBC interface.

·        For administration actions using the MaxDB Database Manager, the EP system uses the SAP RFC library and the MaxDB DBM RFC server.

SAProuter can be used for communication. All connections can be encrypted with SSL.
